This line of descendancy comes from Walsham le Willows in Suffolk. The surname appears in Parish Registers as Foker or Folkard but later is registered variously as Foker, Folkard, Folker Folkerd, and Foulker. This is likely to be due illeteracy of the registrant and the clerk making the entry writing the name as it sounded. The surname eventually settled on Foulker which is how it appears in registers from the 19th century onwards.
Generation 1
John Folkard and Eliza Pollard
The earliest clear connection is John Folkard who married Eliza Pollard at Walsham le Willows on 12 April 1831. They are only known to have had one son.
Generation 2
Children of John Folkard and Eliza Pollard
John was baptised at Walsham le Willows in March 1833. He had children with Maria Matthews but it is not known that they married. After the death of Maria in 1873, John married widow Elizabeth Ramsbottom, née Rothwell, and they had two sons.
Generation 3
Children of John Folkard and Maria Matthews
It is not clear if John had married Maria Matthews, also of Walsham. According to the 1871 census their first three children were born in Walsham, Thomas about 1861, William about 1863 and John in about 1866 but the registrations have not been found. The census of 1871 shows the family listed as Foker and that Maria and her children have been given that same surname. John's occupation was given as a Labourer. John and Maria may have married in 1872 when living in Duck Street, Clitheroe, Lancs. The following year their son Robert was born there on 21 July but died soon afterwards. Maria died of dysentery on 4 September the same year.
Thomas was born about 1861 in Walsham le Willows, Suffolk, but the regfistration has not been found. The 1871 census gave his surname as Foker but it was registered as Foulker when he married Ellen Jane Slinger in Clitheroe in 1887. They had eight sons and two daughters.
William was born about 1863 in Walsham le Willows, Suffolk. He may have married in Chorlton, Lancs in 1888.
John was born about 1868 in Walsham le Willows, Suffolk, but the registration has not been found, so his surname at birth is not known, nor is it known if he married. He died in Clitheroe in 1953 aged 85.
Robert was born in 1873 in Clitheroe, Lancs, but died soon after, about the same time as his mother. His surname at both registrations was given as Folker.
Children of John Folkard and Elizabeth Rothwell
After the death of his first wife Maria, John married Elizabeth Ramsbottom, née Rothwell, in Clitheroe Registry Office on 26 October 1875. Elizabeth was the widow of Robert Ramsbottom and they had had five children. John's surname was registered as Folker, his occupation was given as a Carter and their address was 30 Pimlico, Clitheroe in Lancashire. The family surname was listed as Foulkard in the 1881 census, Foulker in the 1891 census, Faulkerd in the 1901 census and Folker in the 1911 census.
Samuel was born in Clitheroe, Lancs in 1875, his surname being registered as Ramsbottom. He married Maud Bickerton in 1900 and they had a son and a daughter.
David Robert was born in Clitheroe, Lancs in 1879 with the registered surname of Foulker. It is not believed that he was married and he died in Burnley in 1947.
Generation 4
Children of Thomas Frederick Foulker (née Matthews) and Ellen Jane Slinger
The 1891 census listed the family surname as Foulker, the 1901 census as Faulker and the 1911 census as Foulker. Thomas died in Clitheroe in 1918 but Ellen survived until 1955, her surname being registered then as Folker.
Ellen was born in Clitheroe, Lancs in 1888. She married David A Duckworth and they had two sons and two daughters.
William was born in Clitheroe, Lancs in 1890. It is not believed that he married and he died in Clitheroe in 1969.
John Robert was born in Clitheroe, Lancs in 1892, his surname being registered as Folker. He married Mary Heyes in 1914 and they had a son and a daughter. In 1921 he married Ellen Long but it is not thought they had any children. John died in 1969, his surname being registered as Foulker.
Richard was born in Clitheroe in 1895. He married Edith Palmer in 1925 and they had a daughter.
Joseph was born in Clitheroe, Lancs in 1897. Nothing more is known of him.
Thomas was born in Clitheroe, Lancs in 1900. He married Maria Webster in 1926 and they had a daughter. Thomas died in Blackburn in 1975.
James was born in Clitheroe, Lancs on 2 July 1902. He married Alice A O'Neill in 1936 but it is thought they had no children. James died in 1983.
Henry, known as Harry, was born in Clitheroe, Lancs in 1903. Nothing more is known of him.
Arthur was born in Clitheroe, Lancs in 1906, his surname being registered as Faulker. He married Nellie Walsh in 1951 but they had no children. Arthur died in Blackburn in 1962.
Lizzie was born in Clitheroe, Lancs on 11 August 1910. She married William Marsden in 1932 and they had a son. She died in 1978.
